If it's not an emergency, you just talk. What's happening, how long it's been going on, whether it's happened before, who looked at it last. Someone is actually listening to your answers, not reading a script, because those answers are what tell us who and what to send.

If there's something worth understanding, you'll get it explained in plain English. Say your drain keeps clogging every few months. Plenty of companies around here will sell you a monthly membership, and we want to be straight with you about why we never will. Think about what a membership actually is. You're paying somebody, month after month, to keep coming into your house looking for something to fix. If it's not broke, why is anyone looking? La Jolla means the jewel. Or, possibly, land of holes.

Everyone knows La Jolla as the Jewel, from the Spanish la joya. But historians have argued for years that the name actually comes from the Kumeyaay words for land of holes, after the seven sea caves carved into the bluffs. So the most elegant address in San Diego County might literally be named after holes in the ground, and as people who spend our days dealing with what runs through holes in the ground, we find that delightful. The village itself grew from an artists' colony of beach cottages in the 1890s, got its first phone lines in 1899, and didn't see paved streets until 1918, all of it shaped by Ellen Browning Scripps, whose name is still on half the institutions in town.

Those cottage era bones are still part of La Jolla's charm and its plumbing reality. Homes here range from hundred year old originals near the Village to hillside estates, and the older ones carry original galvanized and cast iron that's been fighting salt air the entire time. In houses this finished, nobody wants exploratory holes in the walls, which is exactly why detection equipment and cameras exist. Knowing before opening is the whole game here.
