In San Diego County it's usually grease and food waste in the kitchen line, hair and soap in the bathroom, and mineral scale from the county's hard water slowly narrowing the pipe. In the county's oldest housing stock, from National City to the craftsman streets of North Park, Kensington, and City Heights, aging galvanized steel gives that gunk even more to grab onto.

A blocked drain usually gets worse. A backup can flood a cabinet or a slab and turn into water damage that costs far more than the clog ever would. The goal is a line that flows fully, not one that barely drains.

It's the fix for grease packed restaurant lines from the Gaslamp to the Convoy District, and for years of hard water scale. It also clears the fine root hair and debris that collect in the clay laterals under our older, tree lined streets in Kensington, Talmadge, and Normal Heights.

Snaking clears a path. Hydro jetting cleans the whole pipe wall, which can help stop the same backup from coming back.

It matters most on the county's aging clay and Orangeburg sewer laterals, which shift and crack as our expansive clay soil swells in winter rain and shrinks through the dry months. It's also worth doing before buying an older home in South Park, Golden Hill, or La Mesa Village, so a hidden sewer problem doesn't become your problem right after closing.

Nobody should dig up a yard on a hunch. A camera shows the real issue, and a locator above ground marks its approximate spot, so any repair is targeted instead of guessed at.

Our mature neighborhoods, Talmadge, Kensington, and Normal Heights among them, are full of big thirsty ficus, eucalyptus, and pepper trees sitting over old clay laterals. A hairline crack from shifting soil is all a root needs, and once it's inside it comes back stronger every season.

Left alone, roots go from a slow drain to a full blockage to a collapsed line and a dig. Catching them early keeps a routine cleaning from turning into a major repair.

Around the county we see clay, cast iron, and brittle Orangeburg lines failing from age, roots, and ground movement in our expansive soils. Cast iron under the older city core, in Hillcrest and University Heights, corrodes from the inside until the bottom of the pipe is simply gone. Many of these lines are 50 years old or more and near the end of their life.

A failing sewer line means backups, sewage under the house, and a real health hazard. Fixing the pipe itself, not just clearing the symptom, is the only thing that actually ends it.

It's a strong fit for the hardscape heavy lots and mature landscaping of La Jolla, Coronado, and Point Loma. It's also the answer when the line runs under a driveway, patio, or established garden that would cost a fortune to tear out and rebuild.

Less digging means less destruction. You keep your driveway and your yard, and the new line does the full job underground.

Two culprits dominate here. Galvanized steel supply lines in pre 1970s homes across North Park and the older El Cajon tracts rust shut from the inside and spring leaks. Many are due for a whole home repipe. Copper holds up for decades, but our hard, aggressive water chemistry drives copper pinhole leaks, and high street pressure and worn fittings finish the job.

Water moves fast and soon finds walls, flooring, and framing. Getting the leak stopped and the pipe repaired right protects the house from mold and a much larger bill down the road.

Slab leaks are common in the county's slab on grade tract homes built from the 1950s through the 1970s, across El Cajon, La Mesa, Escondido, and Clairemont, where copper lines run inside the concrete. Shifting clay soil stresses those slabs, and hard water eats copper into pinhole leaks from the inside out.

A hidden leak wastes water every hour, drives up the bill, and damages the foundation and subfloor. Finding it precisely means a small, targeted repair instead of a demolition.

Our hard water is brutal on tanks. Sediment cakes the bottom, the burner works overtime, and the anode rod gives out early, so heaters here often wear out sooner than their rated life. Near the coast, from Imperial Beach and Ocean Beach to Coronado, salt air adds a layer of corrosion on top.

A water heater often fails at a bad time. It can quit on a cold morning or split and flood the garage. Staying ahead of it, or replacing it cleanly, saves both the cold shower and the water damage.

Our hard water builds scale inside the heat exchanger, and that scale is behind most of the shutdowns and error codes. Near the coast, from Imperial Beach and Ocean Beach to Coronado, salt air works on the venting and gas connections too.

A tankless usually gives warnings before it quits, a small leak or a code on the controller. Catching it at that stage often means a repair instead of a whole new unit.

Hard water causes trouble here too. Mineral buildup crusts cartridges, clogs aerators, and wears down valve seats across the county, so fixtures can wear out sooner here than in places with softer water.

A running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons a day, and a small drip only gets worse. A repair can stop the wasted water, the noise and the slow damage.

Faucets take constant use, and San Diego's hard water is rough on the parts inside them. Cartridges seize, aerators clog with scale, and rubber seats and O-rings harden and split, which is what turns a smooth handle stiff and a clean stream into a drip or a spray. Worn angle stops under the sink start leaking on their own.

A dripping faucet or a fixture you fight with every day is easy to live around until the seat fails or a supply line lets go. Handling it while it's still a small part swap keeps it from becoming a cabinet full of water.

San Diego County water runs hard, mineral heavy, and chlorinated. That scale crusts fixtures, shortens water heater life, and leaves the spotting and dry skin people notice every day. Homes on well water out in Fallbrook and the backcountry face their own mix of hardness, iron, and sediment.

Softening and filtration cut the scale that ages a plumbing system early and change how the water feels and tastes coming out of every tap. It's one of the few upgrades that improves every fixture in the house at once.

Municipal supply pressure across the county runs high and swings with demand, and the PRV that controls it wears out over time. When it fails, street pressure reaches your pipes unchecked. Hammering pipes, running toilets, and blown supply lines or water heater valves often trace straight back to it.

Sustained high pressure is one of the quietest ways to wear out an entire plumbing system. A working PRV protects every fixture, appliance, and connection in the house at once.

Homes with irrigation, a pool, or a dedicated assembly get an annual test notice from their water provider. The seals and internal parts wear, so a device that passed last year can fail this one, and hard water and age only speed that along.

A backflow preventer is the barrier between the drinking supply and everything downstream of it, so a failed one is a health issue, not just paperwork. A passing test means the device is still doing its job.
