El Cajon means the box.
The name is Spanish for the box, and it comes from the shape of the place. Foothills close in the valley on every side. The mission padres liked it that way, because the hills kept their cattle from wandering off and caught what little rain ever fell out here.
The city itself came later. In November of 1912, 123 of 158 voters said yes to incorporating a square mile and a quarter around Main and Magnolia. For the next 40 years El Cajon stayed a farm town of a few thousand people.
Then the 1950s happened, and a farm town turned into a city in one decade. If your house came out of that stretch, a camera down the line tells you how the original pipe is holding up.
