The biggest party this town ever threw was about a water bill.

Escondido almost didn't make it, and water was the reason. Settlers kept digging wells and coming up short, and a farm town with no reliable water is a farm town with a deadline. So in the early 1890s the community bet everything on a dam. The irrigation district issued bonds worth three hundred fifty thousand dollars, an enormous number for a place that size, and built the reservoir that's now Lake Wohlford.

Then the money went bad. A depression hit, and plenty of families couldn't pay their share of the taxes on it. The debt hung over the whole valley for years until a compromise finally settled it, and on September 9, 1905, they took the canceled bonds down to the Lime Street school grounds and set them on fire.

Three thousand people came to watch. Escondido's entire population at the time was somewhere between eight hundred and a thousand. The town tripled in size for the afternoon just to see the paperwork burn. A few years later they made it a yearly thing, and Grape Day is still held every September in the same park where it happened.

The water they fought that hard for is still running, and the town that fought for it never stopped building. Escondido today holds houses from the 1880s and houses from last year, sometimes within a few blocks of each other. That's a wide range to walk into cold, which is why the first question is always what era you're standing in, and a camera down the line answers it in one visit.

Escondido looks after its own pipes, and how it does that is worth knowing. The city runs three combination jet rodding and vacuum trucks across roughly three hundred and fifty miles of sewer main. High pressure water, different nozzles for different jobs, breaking blockages and flushing the line out. That's the same basic cleaning method behind hydro jetting.
