The catch is equipment. A handyman carries a little of everything, which works fine right up until the job needs the machine he doesn't own. A hand snake is a real tool. It just isn't the tool for a craftsman with a clay lateral running out under a hundred year old street tree.
When the job goes past what's on his truck, you've already paid and waited, and now you're starting over with the problem another week worse. A good share of what the contractors we send end up fixing started out as somebody's economical fix. Some jobs just need equipment and experience a handyman isn't set up to carry.

Drive from South Park to Rancho Bernardo and you cross about seventy years of construction. The houses change block by block and the plumbing problems change with them, so knowing which problem lives on which street is half of doing this job right.
The old core. North Park, South Park, Golden Hill, University Heights, Kensington, City Heights. A lot of these craftsman homes are pushing a hundred years old, and some still have their original plumbing. The clay sewer lines running out to the street have spent decades under mature trees, which is exactly the arrangement roots are looking for.
North and inland. Clairemont, Bay Park, Serra Mesa, Mira Mesa, University City, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Peñasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Valley. These went up in waves from the fifties forward, many built on concrete slabs with water lines running underneath. A slab leak doesn't announce itself. It shows up as a warm patch on the floor or a water bill that climbs for no reason.
East. Del Cerro, San Carlos, Tierrasanta, Grantville, Navajo. Postwar and sixties construction along the canyon rim, where lots and street layouts vary more than they do on the flat.
The coast. Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Sunset Cliffs, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, La Playa, Loma Portal. Salt air works on water heaters, fittings, and anything metal faster than it does inland, and the older beach cottages have some genuinely creative plumbing hiding behind their walls.
South. Barrio Logan, Logan Heights, Sherman Heights, Encanto, Paradise Hills, Skyline, Bay Terraces, Otay Mesa, San Ysidro. Some of the county's oldest housing sits alongside some of its newest here, plus a lot of multi unit buildings where one failure becomes several people's problem at once.
Downtown. Gaslamp, East Village, Little Italy, Cortez Hill, Marina, Banker's Hill. Vertical plumbing is its own trade. Shared stacks, building access, HOA notice, and a leak that starts on eleven and finishes on nine.

The city threw a parade for its new water. The water didn't show up for three weeks.
San Diego is a desert that decided to be a city anyway, and for a long time the only thing standing in the way was a drink. The fix, when it finally came, was one of the strangest engineering projects in California. A wooden flume, thirty seven miles of it, running from Lake Cuyamaca down through the backcountry on three hundred and fifteen trestles and through a string of tunnels.
The scale of it is hard to picture now. Nine million board feet of redwood, shipped in by boat to San Diego harbor, cut to length, and hauled inland by wagon. It took around eight hundred mules and horses to move the lumber. When the flume opened on Washington's Birthday in 1889, the city put on a parade, let the kids out of school, and shot a stream of what everyone thought was the new mountain water hundreds of feet into the air downtown.
Except it wasn't the new water. There was a blockage in the line, so what everybody stood there cheering was local well water. The real thing arrived about three weeks later. That flume company eventually became what East County knows today as the Helix Water District.
The city built its own system after that, and one rule from it still catches people out. San Diego holds the property owner responsible for the sewer lateral all the way to where it meets the main. Not to the sidewalk, not to the property line, all the way to the main, and the city's own page notes that connection might sit out in the street, on an easement, or down in a canyon. The city will clear a problem past your property line for free, but only if you've lost sewer service entirely, meaning nothing drains at all. A line that's merely slow out there is still yours.
Every era since left its own layer underground. Galvanized in the oldest neighborhoods, cast iron drains, postwar copper across the tract booms, and everything newer since. In a city this size the most useful thing to know about your plumbing is which chapter it belongs to. A camera down the line or a pressure reading answers that in one visit.
